Play

     I do not have much experience as a youth worker. During this past summer I worked at a sports camp. I was a lead camp councilor and I worked along with a few junior councilors. I enjoyed working at this sports camp even though I am not an athlete by any means. The campers were ages 6 to 13. All we did was play games from soccer to dodge ball and even some ice breakers in between. They did not enjoy the ice breakers very much. According to the youth they were boring. 
    In the “Shall we play?”article some of the 6 p’s were used. Passion definitely because most of the campers had a passion for sports and they used that passion to teach others how to play. Also participation, everyone participated even the councilors. The last week of camp there was one camper that did not play most of the games but he participated in a different way. He watch and told the councilors if someone was cheating. 

     In the “Dramatic Role Play” article the junior councilors were role playing (this may be a stretch) they were not really in charge but they would like to think that they were. They though they were of a higher status as the campers and they had a sense of power and control.

  1. I also referred back to the six P's! I agree that passion is definitely needed when working with young people because if they see you being passionate, this will make them want to be passionate as well.

  2. Hello, even know you didn't have a lot of experiencing that little bit you had you enjoyed. You always have to start somewhere and its really cool your first experience you enjoyed it. I have seen different ice-breakers done with youth and they do not always enjoy them, but there is some were they are excited about and want to do it again.

YDEV Ideology

   After doing the Youth Development Ideology Inventory I learned that I fall into the critical youth development ideology. I believe that youth can make a difference and they have a voice. Youth can have important ideas and can contribute to the world.  Youth and adults works together to develop public role play. I learned that I can make a change for the better with youth. When working with youth I should provide spaces that ask youth what they think.      We did this inventory in  my YDEV class last semester and I kept it. I am in the same ideology as last semester.

"Framing youth"

     Youth is “a tribe apart” according to Hersch. Youth has their own customs, language and rituals. All of what I stated above is different with each generation of youth. Some of the things my brothers say and do it very different from when I was a child.        “Youth are in-transition, finding themselves, hormone-driven, emotional, inexperienced, and always in opposition to the adults in their lives.” I believe that being a teenager can be awkward because in essence you are finding who you are going to be but I believe that awkwardness is a rite of passage.       Every youth has a different voice and a different way of using their voice. “Secure the weight of their voice through repetition, reproduction in mainstream text, popular culture and “scientific” studies which naturalize them as a part of the “common sense” of American culture. I agree with this. Youth learn to use their voice because of the media I believe....

Youth Development Anchors ⚓️

     Purposeful Play is the idea of learning through playing. Youth workers need to be mindful of learning opportunities during play. Adding values and purpose to play makes it purposeful play. The 6 p’s of Play  Permission  Process  Passion  Productivity  Participation  Pleasure       Care in youth work is focusing on the developmental needs of the child. A standard definition of care is “the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something.” I believe as youth workers we take that definition to the next level by showing care for our youth and helping them build a better future for themselves. We should feel interested in our youth. As stated in Mapping Interconnected Care there are many ways one can show care including providing snacks when needed, having a clean and organized learning environment and connecting with the youth anyway you can.  ...
